[...] under the life giving influence of the summer
sun. Failing, totally failing in this my dearest
aspiration, my soul ["if" crossed out, "is" written above] ever filled with sorrow
and sadness, for the loss to myself and family.
Have been glancing over the foregoing pages,
and fear it is unprofitable work for me to trace on
paper, even these first shadows of the dark thoughts
of my own mind. But still I feel a sort of pleasure
if so strange a feeling may be called a pleasure, in
thus holding silent communion with myself. Yet
perhaps it were better if I never touched the pen, and
one minute I wish I did not love to, the next a
stronger, wild and vehement wish, gushes up from
my inmost soul, that I had time and leisure
to use it at my will. Have been talking with
Mrs Knight to day. It matter little what the theme,
she and I are always on the opposite side.
Wish I could annihilate space to night, and leaving
this body behind to prepare its duties unaided by
the intellect, while the spirit lingered by the side
of distant loved ones, But though the heart travels
away to there, it comes back unsatisfied. Will it
[underlined: "ever be satisfied below,"] ever raise the exultant
Eureka! over the full fruition of all its aspirations?
Never, no never, for this is not the lot of mortals.

Same Evening 24th
It is now nearly midnight - I've been sitting
up alone for an hour or two writing and
holding silent communion with a picture,
the shadowy face of Annie. Strange how
much of companionship I found in those
eyes to night and how much of inspiration
my spirit has caught from hers just now.
Since I had undressed I went as usual to
take one lingering look out upon the night.
"Gloriously beautiful! What a picture!" was
the first exclamation that comes from my
lips and I felt that such a picture of
silent beauty were worth living [but?] to look
upon. I'm happier now than I was two hours
ago. Wonder what is the reason. My pen, like
David's harp, has exorcised the blues, and I
feel that I shall ever be happier for this
silent vigil, and that I've seen the
glorious night scene. I could [illegible] till it
melts away into the glory of day but this
poor physique must have rest and sleep,
else it will be but a dog at best, so I will
take another look and then yield to the
demands of nature.

["59" crossed out, "61" written to right]
wrote half a dozen pages of foolscap to Mrs S. then
went to bed but not to sleep, for I was wakeful and
could have written all night. The spirit was still
upon me all the forenoon, but I could not yield
to the mood for I had lots to do; but I've
done it all, and coaxed back the wayward fancies
and wrote a little while before supper. But to
night I'm dull and weary. Wish I could recall
the dreams of the morning and give them
form and shape on paper. But as that may
not be I'll write awhile to Annie & [Laurie?]
October 7th 1858
Wee-darlings are all asleep, the folks are all
out and I'm alone by a blazing fire. The wind
howls mournfully, oh how mournfully without,
and the cold autumn "rain is falling where
they lie." But who can tell the fate of the
dead, or the destiny of the living? Have
made a visit to day - a dull, dull one
though. There is more society in the solitude
of this room; and as I sit gazing at the gloomy
coals I can "dream and dream as make life
worth the living." Alas that they should ever
vanish into thin air and leave but a
void behind.

Oct 9th 1858
One year ago yesterday since I said good
bye to Annie on the cars. Wanted to write
some last night but was too "deeply, darkly,
desperately," steeped in indigo to trust myself
with a pen only for the tedium of
copying. It is Saturday night once more, my
weeks work is done, or must be undone. Wonder
if I should be missed any, if that same
work could move along by some invisible
angency. Would any heart be lonely, any one
pine for my society? To know this, would be
a luxury; yet I often feel such a sense of
[underlined: "mental and spiritual isolation"] from all
mankind that I feel that I should no more be
missed ^than the leaf^ that falls from the tree "when summer
is green," and last night I felt this [underlined: "so keenly"]
that I could but weep, and yet perhaps I
make for myself all this wretched cheer, but
the feeling is none the less real. Could I hide
it all within, that it should leave no trace
of an unwritten hearthistory on my brow, I
should be content. But this cannot always
be, and I sometimes fancy that every face
is a mirror of the heart.

Short essay by Celestia Colby in which she recounts an incident in the life of her young daughter J. Rose Colby. The poem they reference is <i>Locksley Hall</i> by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
Transcript:
Little Rose was busily engaged
to night watching the stars
as they came out through the
gathering gloom of the dusky twilight.
There was old Orion wheeling slowly,
majestically up the eastern
sky with its attendant clusters,
the seven sisters of the spring, or
the Pleiades, and when she saw them
for the first time since they began
once more to visit us in the
early evening, a fragment of a
sweet old rhyme was running
wild in her brain, which for
an instant she could neither
catch nor tame to wear its harness
of words and do her bidding, neither
could she recall the name of
the fairy like group of stars which
met her eye with the familiar
look of an old-time friend. As
usual she came to mama in
her perplexity, and her query was
"what is the name of those stars that are
like a swarm [of] silver fire-flies stitched together
in a braid." I could but smile
at her [illegible] rendering of
the poets rhyme, which in her
mind will ever be wedded with
pure cold radiance of the Pleiades.
"I saw the Pleiades rising
through the mellow shade,
glitter like a swarm of fire-flies
tangled in a silver braid."
